Joint Communication from the Mayor’s Office, the Braintree Police Department, and Braintree Public Schools:

Friday, May 18, 2018

Earlier today the Braintree Police Department (BPD) was contacted by an individual who was concerned about the well-being of one of their family members who is a Ross parent.  The BPD contacted the Ross school and advised the school to use our lockdown procedure, and sent officers to the school.

The parent waited in the main office with the principal until police officers arrived and removed the parent from the school to be transported by ambulance for medical attention. After the parent was removed from the school, the police found a weapon in a backpack that the parent had brought into the school. At no time while the parent was in the school did they threaten anyone or state that they had a weapon.

Once the parent was removed, the lockdown was lifted, and the school returned to its normal day. The decision to go into lockdown is always made with the utmost concern for student and staff safety. School staff did an outstanding job responding to this situation, which is drilled several times every year. We appreciate the outstanding and immediate response of the Braintree Police Department, who handled the situation with the seriousness and professionalism that continues to keep us all safe.

The Braintree Police Department is continuing to investigate the matter, and no further information can be released at this time. Any questions should be directed to the Braintree Police Department at 781-794-8764.
