Community Service Opportunity: Town of Braintree Hosting CZM CoastSweep Cleanup at Smith Beach on October 5, 2019

Are you looking for a way to give back to the community and protect Braintree’s environment? The Braintree Stormwater Division is partnering with the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) to host a cleanup at Smith Beach on October 5, 2019 from 9:00 am to 12 noon (rain date: October 12th).

Each September and October, thousands of CoastSweep volunteers across Massachusetts collect tons of trash from beaches, marshes, river banks, and the seafloor. CoastSweep participants join hundreds of thousands of other volunteers in the world’s largest volunteer effort for the ocean – Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup – collecting trash, fishing line, and other marine debris and recording data on what they find. This data is used to find solutions for keeping trash out of the ocean.

“Smith Beach is our Town waterfront” said Mayor Joseph C. Sullivan.  “The area is a great place for families and this clean-up will underline the beach’s importance to our Town”.

To volunteer for the Smith Beach cleanup, please sign up at https://2019coastsweep.eventbrite.com no later than September 20. Participants should park at the Splash Pad parking lot across from Smith Beach on Edgehill Road. Light refreshments will be provided before and after the event. The event coordinator will be signing letters of community service for any participants who wish to document their hours. For more information, please contact Julie Sullivan at (781) 794-8947 or jmsullivan@braintreema.gov.
