Mayor Charles C. Kokoros is pleased to announce that the Town of Braintree has purchased 1.8 acres of land at the intersection of Liberty and Grove Streets, including the Nash-Penniman House located at 1006 Liberty Street. As a result of the purchase, the Town will be able to preserve the house, constructed in 1693, while at the same time maintaining more than half of the property in its current vegetative state.

At the direction of Mayor Kokoros, and with the leadership of Planning and Community Development Director Melissa SantucciRozzi, the Town was able to partner with developer George Clements to bring this deal to fruition. Initially the property was included as part of a proposed 40B housing development and instead will now be used as open space and commercial development, further enhancing the services available to residents in the area.

“Today is an exciting day for our community as we were able to purchase a historic home in our Town that will now be preserved for generations to come,” said Mayor Kokoros. “Since last June I have been working with Ms. SantucciRozzi to rezone this area and her leadership and expertise in planning were key components to the success of the project. Today’s purchase ensures that the property will be redeveloped in a responsible manner and that its future use will be consistent with the neighborhood and in the best interests of our residents.”

The property was purchased using Community Preservation Act funds in the amount of $1,360,000, ensuring that the land purchased by the Town will be preserved and maintained for the public benefit.
