The Peacemaker Award, established to honor civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. and his tireless work in support of others, is awarded annually to a citizen of Braintree who embodies Doctor King’s spirit of giving and activism.
Kerrie Doherty has been an active member of the Braintree community for many years. Best known to most as “Coach Kerrie,” Ms. Doherty founded the “Superstars” League and created an opportunity for those with unique needs to learn and play sports in a fun environment with their family and friends. Ms. Doherty also hosts the annual “Fancy Formal,” which provides an exciting evening of music, dancing and fun for all in attendance.
“It has been such a privilege to work with Kerrie over the years and see first hand the joy her programs bring to everyone involved,” said Mayor Charles C. Kokoros. “Coach Kerrie’s kindness, generosity and continued advocacy for our special needs community truly exemplifies the leadership shown by Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. and I can’t think of a better person to be recognized as this year’s Citizen of the Year.”
The ceremony in honor of Ms. Doherty will be held at 6:30 pm on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Braintree Town Hall. The Braintree High School choir will offer musical selections. Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the ceremony.
