The Institute for Human Centered Design (IHCD) has prepared this ADA Self – Evaluation and Transition Plan report on behalf of the Town of Braintree as part of the Town’s ongoing effort to assess the current level of ADA compliance in programs, services and activities and town-owned facilities. In preparing for this report, IHCD teams surveyed the Town of Braintree municipal facilities, school facilities, Park and Recreation facilities, Fire and Police Departments as well as the Cemetery property that were included in the Request for Proposal.
The municipal facilities includes nine (9) public buildings –including among others; Town Hall and Thayer Public Library. The accessibility survey of those facilities includes all the spaces where the Town offers programs, services and activities to members of the public. The school facilities includes nine (9) schools from Monatiquot School Kindergarten Center through Braintree Highschool; however, both middle schools were not assessed as East Middle School was recently updated and South Middle School is a new construction. The Parks and Recreation facilities includes nineteen (19) parks/outdoor areas. The accessibility survey of those spaces encompassed elements such as accessible routes, walking surfaces, slopes, picnic tables, play areas and recreational areas. These nineteen (19) parks/outdoor areas include the Town’s major parks as well as representative smaller parks, Smiths beach, and Sunset lake.
IHCD submitted separate reports for each facility that was surveyed. To assist in prioritizing accessibility improvements to ensure compliance with the ADA Title II, each of the building and outdoor area reports include an overview that identifies the most substantial accessibility issues and order of magnitude cost estimates for corrective action.
The reports will be online for a 45 day review period from May 8, 2023 – June 22, 2023 where residents are encouraged to give feedback and comments.
