Preparing Before the Storm
❄️ Preparing Before the StormBefore a storm event begins, Braintree DPW is already preparing behind the scenes to keep roads and sidewalks safe for everyone. Our crews service:🛣️Roads First, Sidewalks SecondMain roads are cleared by Town DPW equipmentSide Roads (27 secondary routes) are cleared by contractors. Ideally, each route would have 2 assigned contractors that work together. Town DPW is the backup for areas without enough contractor coverage. Contractor routes are tracked with GPS, so we know the details on all our side streets.Last Spring, DPW analyzed our Snow Contractor pay rates with adjacent communities and made adjustments to make sure we could compete on the snow contractor market–great thinking ahead by our Team to make sure we had resources in place in the event of a heavy snow.💰 Planning Ahead Saves Taxpayer MoneyDPW proactively created a snow farm at the compost site before the season began. 🍂 Leaves were cleared to make space for snow to be stored there during major storms.In-Town snow storage areas significantly reduce the cost to move snow, and transport trucks have less downtime moving between snow-clearing areas.🤝 Working Together Across AgenciesSnow operations are a team effort. DPW works collaboratively with:🚧 The State for state-owned roads🚉 The MBTA for sidewalks near T stations🏘️ Local crews for neighborhood streets and sidewalks🚶 Sidewalk PrioritiesWith limited time and resources, sidewalk plowing is prioritized for:🚌 Frequently used bus stops🏫 Schools🏬 Business centers - Did you know that if you are a retail business owner, it is your responsibility to clear your sidewalk, or else you could face fines? Check out the Ordinance 12.04.050: https://ecode360.com/14706765.One of the biggest challenges crews face is when snow from driveways or private property is shoveled into the sidewalks, making it difficult for sidewalk plows to get through. Our sidewalk plows are strong, but it takes a lot to tackle banks towering above the plow’s roof.🛠️ Equipment & Backup PlansDuring heavy storms, equipment can break down. DPW has:🔧 On-site maintenance staff🚜 Backup equipment ready to go🤝Relationships with local on-call mechanicsThis keeps downtime short and routes moving.📊 After the StormAfter every storm, DPW conducts an after-action review looking at:✔️ Costs✔️ What worked well✔️ What can be improved next time🧑🤝🧑 How You Can Be a Good NeighborResidents play a big role in helping snow operations run smoothly:❌ Don’t shovel driveway snow into the street or sidewalk❌ Don’t pile snow at the edge of your driveway where plows pass✅ Clear sidewalks, crosswalks, and fire hydrants near your property📞 Questions or Concerns? Please reach out directly to the Mayor’s Office or DPW with snow-related concerns.⚠️ SeeClickFix may not be monitored during active storm operations. -

Braintree Public Schools Master Facilities Planning
Braintree is kicking off work to build a community-informed plan that ensures our schools and learning environments meet the needs of students and educators – now and in the future.
To do this, we must look closely at the conditions of our schools, how the spaces are organized and used, and what we can do differently so they better serve our community going forward. For more information or to get involved, visit: bpsfacilitiesplan.com.

Herring and Fisheries Commission
Mayor Joyce recently introduced the establishment of a Herring and Fisheries Commission under Town Council Order 25-058, which was unanimously adopted by the Council on September 16, 2025.
With the recent success of the Monatiquot River Restoration Project which reopened fish passage to Great Pond and Sunset Lake for the first time in 200 years – this new commission will ensure that progress continues for generations to come.
Interested in joining? We’re actively seeking additional members to join the commission, with a particular emphasis on engaging the youth. Contact the Mayor’s Office at 781-794-8100 or mayorsoffice@braintreema.gov for more information.Read more about the Herring and Fisheries Commission.

MAYOR JOYCE SHARES UPDATE ON PLANS FOR FORMER MOTEL 6 PROPERTY
This site was most recently approved for the development of a Chick-fil-A restaurant and a bank with active planning board presentations as recently as August to discuss minor modifications to that permit. However, the Town has been informed that the plans for this property have changed and future plans are currently uncertain. Torrington Properties, who owns the site, received notice recently that Chick-fil-A would not be exercising its right to occupy the site as was anticipated.
“While this news is surprising to all of us, we recognize the immediate positives – that substantial improvements have already been made to the site and the eyesore that was Motel 6 is cleaned up,” said Mayor Joyce. “We look forward to continuing to work with Torrington as they secure a new tenant and proceed with construction, as we are all anxious to have a new investment in the heart of our Town."
